Description
**Originally Listed At $400**

Central Asia, India, ca. 17th to 18th century CE. A fine cast-brass lion guardian figure known as a yali rearing up, presenting a curled tail, sinuous body, and front legs resting upon a square socket and the hind legs upon a circular base with a concave underside for mounting upon a surface. The fierce visage is composed of slender ovoid eyes, and a gaping mouth with a pointed tongue and flame like ears and mane add to his mythical qualities. Yalis are similar to leogryphs, mythical hybrid lion creatures - often with bird or elephant attributes, that are often incorporated into temples as protective spirits. Size: 3.75" W x 5" H (9.5 cm x 12.7 cm)

Provenance: private New Jersey, USA collection; ex-Senatus Consulto, Denmark
