Item Details
Description
South Asia, Southern India, likely Tamil Nadu, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A cast brass statue of Deepalakshmi, a representation of Lakshmi, holding a lamp known as a diya or deepa - (the name Deepalakshmi is literally Lamp Lakshmi). Lakshmi is the Hindu goddess of good fortune- she is dressed in lavish clothing and jewelry with birds perched on her shoulders. In her hands is the diya bowl that can hold oil and function as a lamp. This statue may have been used in a home, and most shrines had at least one oil lamp, which could be simple bowls, but they often feature or form part of a deity statue as well - similar to this example. Size: 2.5" L x 3" W x 6.75" H (6.4 cm x 7.6 cm x 17.1 cm)
