East Asia, China and Japan, ca. mid-20th century CE. A set of two hats from China and Japan and a pair of two shoes. First is a Chinese farming hat woven from slender bamboo fibers with a conical midsection and a broad brim reinforced with white thread. Second is a traditional Shinto priest hat known as an eboshi made from rigid black cloth with a narrow head opening beneath a central crest. The first pair of shoes are carved from wood with a rubber tread riveted to the heels and toe area for extra stability, these may have been used for farming. The other pair are black lacquered wood with padding, and these are ceremonial shoes for Shinto priests. Display head for photography purposes only. Condition
Eboshi has creasing along upper area beneath crest and straw hat has minor darkening to some surfaces, otherwise both are intact and very good. Wearable as shown. Wooden shoes have fissures and perforations through toe area and sole. Nicks, chips, abrasions as shown from use. Black shoes have cracking and chipping to lacquer, discoloration of padding, and wear on soles as expected with use.
