Description
Native American, Southwestern United States, New Mexico, (Dine) Navajo, ca. 1930s CE. A pair of handwoven wool textiles, both samplers in preparation for larger weavings. The main wool wefts are woven over cotton warps - the lengthier piece is slightly more supple with a tight weave- possibly as a blanket rather than a rug. Samplers such as these were made by weavers as swatches for the patterning and colors before committing to a full length project. In Dine weaving tradition the deity, Spider Woman, taught the ancestral people to weave using a fantastical loom and materials made from the earth, lightning, and sky. Cotton was their main material for hundreds of years before the Spaniards' introduction of sheep. Size: 43.5" L x 18" W (110.5 cm x 45.7 cm)
