West Africa, Ghana, Ashanti people, ca. 19th to 20th century CE. A stylized face pendant cast from brass via the lost wax method and strung on thread as a wearable necklace in modern times with an assortment of beads. The breads are a variety of materials and unrelated to the pendant - their origin uncertain and added for ornamentation, and include malachite spheres, carnelian, agate, glass seed beads, and painted pottery. The other pendant is modern brass featuring the traditional Ashanti mask-face form and strung on a modern nickel-plated chain. Size of beaded strand: 25" L (63.5 cm); face pendant: 2.25" L x 1.25" W (5.7 cm x 3.2 cm)
Provenance: private Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA collection; ex-Minerva Gallery; ex-Benjamin Vega, California, USA, acquired in 2006 to 2007; ex-Gene and Virginia George, brought to the USA from 1961 to 1966
