Description
**Originally Listed At $200**

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Sepik River District, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden food hook, also known as a cult hook or a suspension hook by anthropologists. The lengthy tool has an openwork, phalliform body with a spade-shaped head, and the semicircular base bears a pair of projecting hook barbs. The indigenous peoples suspended food from hooks like this example to keep the edible materials away from rats or other ground-dwelling animals. Size: 22.75" L x 5.75" W (57.8 cm x 14.6 cm)

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired in January 2015; ex-private Wormerveer, The Netherlands collection
