Biography: Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Maurice started his career and training in art at the age of ten, and his first works were hung in the local museum during a school exhibit. After his University studies and serving in the Air Force, he moved to Southern California, where he now lives with his wife and family. In California, Maurice began studies in seascape and landscape paintings which lead to his inimitable style using direct and indirect light to create natural luminescence that brings startling reality to the subjects he paints. Using techniques he has mastered over 50 years of experience painting with tiny brushes and strokes.
He varies his hues in seascapes by painting the ocean during three basic time periods the moon at night, during morning and afternoon, and at sunset when warmer hues are prevalent. After viewing the Rembrandts at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, Maurice was influenced by Rembrandt’s use of highlighting, contrasted by dark masses of complimentary hues. He is often referred to by critics and art dealers as the Rembrandt of seascapes. Maurice was heavily influenced by works of JMW Turner , and the early American artists Thomas Cole, Thomas Moran and Albert Bierstadt; and today, he is recognized as one of the country's leading artists working in that renowned Hudson River School pioneered by Cole, Durand, Bierstadt and others.
