Description
30 Rare Sulfides, early19th Century Molten Sulfur Casts of 18th and contemporary 19th Century Medallions each with a fine "Bronze" outer patina. Includes: 2 Shakespeare, William Windham 1742, Britain Triumphed Hawke Commanded 1759, Sir Thomas Lawrence 1830 by Bailey, Kosciuszko 1818, Schiller 1805, Goethe 1832, Isaac Newton, Rossini, etc. Diameter of larger 1 7/8 inches (4.7 cm.). NOTE: Sulfur casts became popular substitutes for coin collectors starting around 1800; sold by Numismatic Dealers as less expensive, but very accurate casts of famous medallions issued in the 18th and early 19th Centuries. There were 2 famous manufacturers of coin copies using molten sulfur which does not shrink on cooling, M. Mionnet whose sulfur casts were coated in a black patina, and Admiral William Henry Smyth (1788-1865) whose casts were coated in green, red, or yellow imitating the original bronze patina. Many of the original medallions in this group are in the permanent Money & Medals Department Collection of the British Museum in London.
