Description
U. S. Flags: 34-Star Flag Flown During Civil War. 94" x 59" finely-woven cotton flag with 34-stars (1861-1863). Accompanying documents indicate it was made by Mr. and Mrs. M. M. N. Smith at Great Neck, Long Island, in 1863 ("Grandmother and Grandfather Smith made it every stitch by hand and it was flown at their home at Great Neck... during the Civil War..."). It was also carried in World War I by Ernest Montgomery Sutphen (Co. B 108 Engineers 33rd Division Illinois). It has a rope hoist, scattered moth holes (mainly in a few of the white stripes), two tears in the canton and repaired/reinforced right corners. Overall, the condition is quite nice.
