GRENFELL PICTORIAL HOOKED LARGE-SIZE MAT / RUG, dyed silk or rayon stocking material, DESCRIPTION UPDATE 6/17/13 depicting a map of Newfoundland featuring a spouting whale, several sailing vessels, seal, buildings and teepees. Label on reverse "Grenfell Labrador Industries / Hand Made in Newfoundland & Labrador". Conservation mounted to a wooden frame for hanging. Design attributed to Valda Vaughn, Brooklyn, NY. Circa 1938. 42" x 32 1/4".

Catalogue Note: According to the exhibition label this design was hooked in three sizes with this being the largest. An interesting technique is used in the inner outline of the map; a subtle change of color and stitch direction adds a complexity to the hooking which provides textural interest.

Fine or better condition with strong colors, the only apparent damage being six small (1/8") holes along the top edge likely from a previous mounting. Along with a folder of exhibition records and correspondences.
