Description

Important Philadelphia silk on linen sampler, dated 1739, wrought by Rebaccah Claypoole aged 9, possibly worked at the school of Elizabeth and Ann Marsh, 6 3/4'' x 11 3/4''. While the present example follows the general band layout of early Philadelphia works carried over from English design, it is more fully developed with figures, birds, and elaborate floral sprays.

Condition

A few small sporadic losses to edge, mostly along bottom. Overall very good condition with nice colors.
