Description
Rare and unusual Durant Kilns footed incense burner with lid done in 1920. The body is done in blue over aubergine glazes with the tripod base done in brown mat. The lid blue lid with aubergine finial is reticulated and the smaller holes are filled with translucent glaze creating a plique-a-jour effect when held up to a light. Whether this was intentional or accidental, the effect is striking and somewhat reminiscent of Wayland Gregory’s work with glass and ceramic in combination. Incised marks include “Durant” “V” and “1920.” Height 6 1/2 inches. There is a 1/2 by 1/4 inch kiln kiss on the shoulder.
