Description
A PRECIOUS MEDIEVAL ILLUMINATION, FRANCE 1280
[Bible, Medieval illumination] Medieval Bible. French illuminated medieval manuscript on thin uterine vellum, written in Latin, Gothic texture. Book of Psalms. [North of France, about 1280].
Folio (284x210 mm), two columns, 46 lines.
A precious and tasteful illuminated leaf from a medieval bible, containing the Psalms 104, 105, 106, 107 and 108. At recto an illuminated two-line C in gold, blue and sepia and many red and blue rubricated initials. The text is enriched by gold, blue and red marginal extensions.
At verso many red and blue rubricated initials. A four-line P and a two lines D in gold, blue and sepia enriched the first column with rich extensions to the lower margin.
On the second column a nine-line wonderful illuminated O, with marginal extension raising to middle of page. Inside the O the miniature of Christ “in Maestà”, blessing with the right hand and with the left bearing the globe.
The leaf are ruled in lead point. The support is of extraordinary quality and thinness, made with major probability by uterine vellum. The characteristics of handwriting and the kind of miniatures led to say that the leaf comes from a Bible produced in a refined atelier of North of France.
