Item Details
Description
Oil on canvas portrait of Charles Dickens (1812-1870), after Daniel Maclise (Irish/British, 1806-1870). Appears to be a smaller, 19th century copy of the 1839 painting of the young author, also painted by Maclise, which has been on loan for many years by the Tate to the National Portrait Gallery. Molded giltwood frame. 15-1/2" x 12" sight, 18" x 15" framed. Note: Dickens and Maclise had become close friends the summer before the famous 1839 portrait was painted. Dickens recorded in a letter written June 1839 that 'Maclise has made another face of me, which all people say is astonishing'.
Condition
Repaired 1/2" tear on Dickens' leg, 3/4" patch to lower center (by chair leg), 9" scratch to left side, scattered tiny abrasions to left quadrant. Possibly relined (edges of canvas taped to frame). Abrasions to frame, light letters "Cha" visible on lower front of frame.
