Description
Two Native American paintings, gouache on paper, both dated 1931, one depicting a seated warrior as viewed from the side, signed lower right "Mopope, '31" (Steven Mopope, Kiowa, 1898-1974) and the other depicting a rear view of a seated warrior and female dressed in a blue robe, signed lower right "Gib. Mopope, '31". Matted and housed in the original frames. 1st painting - Sight: 9-3/4" H x 6-1/8" W. Framed: 16-1/2" H x 11-3/4" W. 2nd painting - Sight: 9-3/4" H x 6-5/8" W. Framed: 16-1/2" H x 11-3/4" W. Provenance: A Nashville estate. Biography: One of the "Five Kiowas," Stephen Mopope was one of a group of Native American artists who were brought to the University of Oklahoma by Oscar Jacobsen in 1926 and provided with studio space and materials. Their work attracted international attention at the Prague exposition. Mopope also worked for the WPA program executing murals for public buildings. Source: Peter Falk, Who Was Who in American Art. Note: Mopope's style was sometimes replicated by another Native American artist, Woody Big Bow (1914-1988) who is known to have used the Mopope signature.
Condition
Both with overall toning to paper, one with foxing. Abrasions to frames.
