Robert Broderson (North Carolina, 1920-1992), gouache and watercolor on found paper with sgraffito outlines, surrealist scene of man in tipping chair. Signed upper right. Linen mat, black painted frame. 19-1/2" x 14-1/2". Frame 25" x 20". Biography: Broderson was born in Connecticut and died in Virginia, but was active most of his career in North Carolina. He began painting as an older student while attending Duke University on a GI Bill after World War II. After graduating in 1950, he studied with Mauricio Lasansky at the State University of Iowa, where he received a M.F.A. Broderson then returned to Duke where he taught drawing and painting. He left Duke in 1964 after receiving a Guggenheim Fellowship. He also taught at North Carolina State at Raleigh and the Skowhegan School of painting in Maine before retiring in the 1960s to devote his career to painting. His work has been exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Pennsylvania Academy, Corcoran Art Gallery, and the Mint Museum in Charlotte, among others.
