Description
Hudson River School, manner of Paul Gottlieb Weber, mid 19th century oil on canvas landscape in original giltwood frame. The large scale painting, rich in visual symbolism, depicts sojourners on horseback with pack mules in a shadowed valley, ascending a trail up the vegetation-covered ravine. They appear to be leaving behind a lake and mountains with brighter sky above, visible in the background. 29" x 39" sight. The wide, giltwood frame measures 36" x 46". No signature found. Circa 1870. Provenance: the estate of Helen B. Patterson, Gallatin, Tennessee.
Condition
Painting has been relined and has scattered spots of loss and inpainting, including two in the center sky area (3/4" and 1-1/2"L). Minute flake at the base of tree. Area of surface abrasion in treetops. Frame appears to retain the original gilding but has numerous surface hairlines.
