Description
Oil on canvas mythological painting of Venus and Vulcan, attributed to Louis Jean Francois LaGrenee (French, 1725-1805). Venus sits at left, attended by two cherubs, while her blacksmith husband Vulcan looks on admiringly, resting against his anvil with a hammer in his hand. Possible signature in Venus's lower left robe area (under cherub). Ornate 19th century giltwood frame with bead, ovolo and acanthus moldings. 17" x 25-3/4" sight, 28-1/2" x 37" framed. Provenance: acquired in France.
Condition
Old relining and later stretcher. Small flake to upper right corner, 3/4" area of flaking at lower center, 3/4" area of flaking near Vulcan's leg, overall craquelure. Blacklight reveals scattered areas of inpainting. Frame shows scattered small losses and abrasions and corner repairs.
