Item Details
Description
We are very pleased to present this highly collectible & valuable set of 1935-1938 pink Depression glass Sharon (Cabbage Rose) pieces by the Federal Glass Company. Our set includes the valuable #6, 80 oz. ice lip pitcher + (5) #24, 5.25 inch Lemonade tumblers, and a #16, butter dish & cover. *** Some of the Sharon pattern items have been reproduced, but according to the expert references, of our items, only the covered butter has been produced, and the estate has documented that all of these were in the family since the 1950s. The ice lip pitcher & 4 tumblers constitutes a full Lemonade set, and they are all in excellent condition as is the covered butter. 1 tumbler only, has a small rim chip. This gorgeous Depression group weighs 7# and the pitcher (measured for reference) stands 7.5 x 5.5 x 9 inches tall. Gene Florence and Others list this Pink group as follows: EXC. Ice Lip pitcher = $175, (4) EXC. tumblers = $40 / each, and the covered butter = $36. That makes the total value of the lot $370, with an extra tumbler thrown in. xxxxxxxxxxxx. The Federal Glass Company started operating in Columbus, Ohio in 1900, making pressed glass. This manufacturing technique utilized metal forms and hot liquid glass to create a line of glassware that beat out much of the competition due to the low prices and distinctive lines that featured raised designs resembling popular needlepoint patterns. During the early years, the glass molds for tumblers, breakfast ware and lunch ware were filled by hand. Federal expanded its factory and purchased automated glass making equipment in the 1920s. The company also enlarged its sales force and began marketing the glass to homemakers for use as dinnerware and bar beverage sets. The early designs continued to be made using state-of-the-art mold injected machinery and new colored glassware patterns in amber, pink, purple and blue were introduced. Federal also participated actively in the 1920s kitchenware revolution, producing a number of designs, including a number of jars, refrigerator storage containers, and well-made juice reamers. Shrewd marketing expanded sales into restaurants, hospitals and the military during World War II. Though incorporated as Federal Paper Board Company in 1958, Federal remained one of the largest glass manufacturers until the 1960s, when American dinnerware tastes turned to plastics such as Melmac. To combat the move to synthetics, Federal Glass attempted to rename & reintroduce classic Depression patterns, but Federal's new designs and sales approach was not successful. The doors of the plant were closed in 1979. At the auction liquidating the plant, the Indiana Glass Company purchased the newer glass molds, which they then began to use at their own factory.Well known Federal Depression patterns include; Colonial Fluted, Columbia, Diana, Georgian, Madrid, Mayfair, Normandie, Optic, Paneled, Parrot, Patrician, Raindrops, Rosemary, Sharon (Cabbage Rose), & Twisted Optic.
