Item Details
Description
We are exceptionally proud to showcase this incredible full, fine Bohemian porcelain hand painted fish service by Oscar & Edgar Gutherz ca. 1895-1905. The fish are some of the most colorful we have ever seen, and their definition is simply stunning. Unlike most 1900 fish sets that have minor supporting accents, our treasures are a brilliant rainbow of colors including magnificent pink Tea Rose bouquets, and beautiful floral gilt rim bands. The set features a prominent 17.25" x 10.25" x 2" high platter, and Twelve glorious 8.75" x 1" plates, finished in 4 different types of game fish. The base carries the proper O. E. & G. Royal Austria wreath stamp, that was only used between 1889 and 1918. This fantastic set predates 1910, due to the workmanship and quality finish materials, which were not available during the war years. The total set weight is 12#. PUT SIMPLY, THIS IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL FISH SERVICE WE HAVE SEEN IN YEARS. Research consulted: Marks on German, Bohemian and Austrian Porcelain 1710 to the Present / by Robert Rontgen; Directory of European Porcelain / by Ludwig Danckert; Bohemian Decorated Porcelain / by Dr. James D Henderson; Marks & Monograms on European and Oriental Pottery & Porcelain (14th Revised Edition) / by Wm. Chaffers. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. Maximilian Marx and Oscar Gutherz established a porcelain decorating factory along the Rolava (Rohlau) River in Stara Role, Altrohlau, Bohemia in 1884. The business was financed by the famed Importer Lazarus Straus & Sons of New York (**see below). By 1889 the business expanded into making porcelain, and in that same year, Oscar Gutherz was joined by brother Edgar (former manager of the New York & Rudolstadt Pottery) who had purchased Marx's share of the business, which led to an expansion, and stepping beyond the exclusive contract which, up to this time, had bound the Gutherz family to market their porcelain under Lazarus Straus & Son, using their LS&S factory mark. After successfully exporting their high quality factory wares with different Import / Export firms for 20 years, the factory was purchased by OPIAG in 1918, under the name of OPIAG Betrisbsstatte (Branch) Altrohlau, with a subsequent name change to EPIAG Betrisbsstatte (Branch) Altrohlau in 1920, which it carried until the factory was nationalized at the end of WW II. Most of our Bohemian / Bavarian qualifications including manufacturers identification, pricing and dating are accomplished by using the following outstanding references: Marks on German, Bohemian and Austrian Porcelain 1710 to the Present / by Robert Rontgen; Directory of European Porcelain / by Ludwig Danckert; Bohemian Decorated Porcelain / by Dr. James D Henderson; Marks & Monograms on European and Oriental Pottery & Porcelain (14th Revised Edition) / by Wm. Chaffers; Pottery & Porcelain Marks European, Oriental and USA In Chronological Order / by E. George Perrott
