9th-11th century AD. A hand-forged iron axehead of 'bearded' profile with narrow shank and L-shaped extension to a broad, curved edge; two lateral expansions to the sides of the socket and to the rear a flat face; the socket and rear of the blade with silver cladding with lines of punched-point detail following the outer contour of the plate, punched-point cross to the rear and opposed triangles to the sides.
