Description
a seal of the French Prime Minister 1906 - 1909 and 1917 - 1920
Red gold and silver, the gold surface of the seal with carved monogram "GC", the conical, square handle engraved with a honeycomb pattern and covered with red gold lilies, the arched red gold knob plate with engraved monogram "ID" (the giver?). Height 63 mm, weight 34 g. In original case with dark red velvet and silk lining.
From Royal Bavarian ownership. In addition an autograph by Clemenceau ("Je vous les donnerai toujours. Je vous embrasse. G. Clemenceau") in ink on paper of the "Senat - Republique Francaise", the envelope sealed on the back with the above-mentioned seal, a photo of Clemenceau in a coach, signed "R. Clemenceau Paris 9 Januar 1911", and a letter of provenance.
George Clemenceau, from 1871 representative of the Radical Socialist Party in the National Assembly, became Senator in 1902, Minister of Home Affairs in 1906 and shortly afterwards Prime Minister. After holding the office of War Minister in WW I, Clemenceau resumed the office of Prime Minister in 1917. As such he took a unforgiving stance against Germany in the Versailles negotiations.
