Charming autumn flower still life
Overall dimensions framed: 115 x 132 cm
Provenance: Art Collection Pelikan, Hannover
The floral still life by Josef Pieper is of particular expressive power and is more of a rarity in his oeuvre

This painting was created by Josef Pieper around 1940. Executed in oil on canvas, the painter presents here a large-scale autumn flower still life with fruits. In simple cylindrical vases appears a bouquet of gladioli and another bouquet with decaying colorful autumnal flowers, including asters and dahlias. On a draped white tablecloth further fruit, pears and apples are presented in front of the flowers. The composition of Pieper’s flower still life on the one hand shows simplicity and on the other expresses the beauty of nature by the use of simple materials and through combining clear and muted colors.

The painting is signed lower right ‘Jos. Pieper’ and is restored. The edges of the canvas are relined. Some tears are closed through canvas patches on the reverse. One of them at the left is slightly pressing through with a craquelure and a smaller loss of color as visible on the recto, a further tiny loss of color at the lower edge of the painting. The frame also indicates minor signs of wear. The stretcher measures 98 x 115 cm. The framed dimensions are 115 x 132 cm.
