This image, which shows the subject covering her face, is the first photograph ever taken of the girl whose eyes have captivated the world since appearing on the cover of National Geographic Magazine. McCurry’s most iconic image of the Afghan Girl, Sharbat Gula, was first featured on the cover of National Geographic magazine in 1984, as he shared with Americans some of the most powerful images of the Soviet war in Afghanistan and put a face to the suffering of the refugees in Pakistan.

Famous photojournalist McCurry was born in Philadelphia and graduated cum laude from the College of Arts and Architecture at the Pennsylvania State University. After working at a newspaper, McCurry traveled to India, where his renowned career as a photographer began. His photographs of the rebel-controlled Afghanistan were among the first to show the conflict, earning him the Robert Capa Gold Medal for Best Photographic Reporting from Abroad. He has won countless awards since. McCurry's claim to fame is his photograph of an Afghan girl that has been shown all over the world, appeared on the cover of National Geographic magazine, and is one of the most recognizable images of our time. He has photographed all over the world, from Tibet, to Cambodia, to China. His documentary photographs are easily some of the most important images of our generation.
