Russell Sage (1816–1906) Financier. Sage invested successfully in the La Crosse Railroad in Wisconsin, and he eventually acquired an interest in more than forty railroads, serving as director or president of twenty. He helped organize the Atlantic & Pacific Telegraph Co. 5†x 8†autograph letter signed, House of Representatives, Washington, March 3, 1855, to President Franklin Pierce. “…I herewith enclose a recommendation for the appointment of Lt G L Willard, as one of the Captains in the Companies to be organized by virtue of the recent act of Congress….†George Lamb Willard (1827-1863) was an officer in the Union Army who commanded a New York regiment and, briefly, a brigade in the Civil War. He lost his life leading the brigade in the II Corps at the Battle of Gettysburg.
