Description
James M. Trotter (1842-1892) Civil rights advocate. Trotter came to Boston to join the Massachusetts 54th Regiment, the first African-American corps of soldiers in the Civil War. After the war, Trotter became the highest ranking African-American in the federal government in his position as Federal Recorder of Deeds. 8 ½†x 14â€, folded to 3 ½†x 8 ½â€, partially printed legal document signed, District of Columbia, December 19, 1887. The document is a Deed of Trust, signed by Trotter as Recorder of Deeds.
