Jenny Lind (1820-1887) Swedish opera singer. Lind was known as the “Swedish Nightingaleâ€. One of the most highly regarded singers of the 19th century, she performed in soprano roles in opera in Sweden and across Europe, and undertook an extraordinarily popular concert tour of America beginning in 1850 at the invitation of the showman P. T. Barnum. She gave ninety-three large-scale concerts for him and then continued to tour under her own management. She returned to Europe with her husband, Otto Goldschmidt, in 1852 where she had three children and gave occasional concerts over the next two decades, settling in England in 1855. 4 ½†x 7†autograph letter signed, “Jenny Goldschmidt,â€seven pages, Eagle Lodge, November 26, 1849, to Lady Stuart. “…the devil has not much room to dance about in as in ‘most human hearts,’ forgive this strong expression…Mr. Goldschmidt begs to be most kindly remembered both to you and to Sir George….â€
