Eleanor Steber (1914-1990) Operatic soprano. Steber made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1940 and was one of its leading artists through 1961. She was known for her large, flexible silvery voice, particularly in the high-lying soprano roles of Richard Strauss. She was equally well known for her lyrical portrayals of Mozart's heroines, many in collaboration with conductor Bruno Walter. Two signed items: 8 ½†x 11†typed letter, The Eleanor Steber Music Foundation, July 20, 1979, to Jacob Bacal. “…I can only beg off by saying this has been a very busy season for me with some 40 hours a week of teaching, giving concerts and travelling….†Also a 3 ½†x 5 ½†black and white photograph signed, “Cordially Eleanor Steber.â€
