Description
Walter Wellman (1858-1934) Journalist, explorer. Wellman attempted unsuccessfully both to reach the North Pole and to cross the Atlantic Ocean by powered airship. In the northern autumn of 1910, Wellman launched his airship America from Atlantic City, New Jersey. After 38 hours the engine failed and the airship drifted until they were rescued by the Royal Mail steamship Trent. A second airship, the Akron, was built the next year. It exploded during its first test flight. Killed were the crew of five, including its captain. 5 ½†x 3 ½†sepia toned postcard photograph of the airship U. S. S. Akron, signed.
