German Monarch KAISER WILHELM - Autograph Speech
Item Details
Description
Kaiser Wilhelm II (1859-1941) German Monarch. Wilhelm was the oldest grandson of Queen Victoria of England, King of Prussia, and the last German Emporer. He was crowned in 1888 and launched Germany on a bellicose “New Course†in foreign affairs that culminated in his support for Austria-Hungary in the crisis of July 1914 that led to the First World War. Bombastic and impetuous, he sometimes made tactless pronouncements on sensitive topics without consulting his ministers. An ineffective war leader, he lost the support of the army and fled to exile in the Netherlands. He settled in Amerongen, where in November 1919, he issued a formal statement of abdication and released his soldiers and officials from their oath of loyalty to him. He subsequently purchased a country house in the municipality of Doorn. 8†x 10â€, seven page (front and back), handwritten, pencil, impassioned speech, “Doom 6. VI. 26â€, signed at the conclusion with his initial “W.â€Â The speech, in German, is titled, You people of little belief why are you so fearful. Filled with religious symbolism, he compares the German people to St. Peter, as he and his boat's passengers foundered amongst the waves. As Jesus appeared and lifted Peter from the water at his point of greatest despair, "...ebenso geht es bei den Voelkern" ("such is it with [our] people"). In as much, he accuses the politicians of Germany for abandoning faith and delivering the people of Germany, now in the throes of the post WWI depression, to be "feasted upon by the 28 Nations", who attacked his peaceful people. He substantiates his take that his support of Austria was one of solidarity and friendship, and that Germany was in essence blindsided by the thuggish Allies. Beyond that, he casts the loss of WWI as a political failure, using his generals (in spite of the fact that they essentially deposed him during the war) as exhibits of people of faith, who conquered in spite of odds stacked overwhelmingly against them, particularly because they "believed". Only when his people cast off the irons of this new Republic which now chains them, when they in their darkest hour call to God for help, will they be lifted from this misery. He concludes with the admonition “Expect the Lord – He will come†and quotes Carlyle, “Don’t despair, but workâ€, and Goethe, "Wir heissen Euch hoffen" ("We call upon you to hope").
