Christian Eisenberger (b.1978) – Austrian artist

From a series of 9,975 numbered cardboard standups, which the artist installed in public spaces
Dimensions: 142 x 75 cm
Provenance: Austrian private collection
The artist uses photocopied elements and the faces of different celebrities such as Martin Luther, Gandhi as well as Einstein, Osama Bin Laden and Arnold Schwarzenegger, making reference to religious and political role models, which he presents within a new context
The present work by Christian Eisenberger (b. 1978) is a unique relict from one of the artist’s earliest works and part of a series of nearly 10,000 numbered cardboard standups, which the artist initially displayed anonymous in Beijing, Paris, Vienna, Basel, London and Salzburg attached to lampposts, bridge railings or trees. As a theme Eisenberger initially chose social outsiders, such as migrants or beggars and later added the photos of (in)famous figures, as here, for example, Martin Luther, Gandhi and Einstein, Osama Bin Laden and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Eisenberger’s oeuvre, which deals with the traditional theme of ephemerality, evades any categorization. Often the artist leaves it to chance whether his works end up in a museum collection or in the trash.
The cardboard is wavy due to the nature of the work and shows signs of wear. It is inscribed ‘12.6.07 / 204 / Favoritenstr. 1’ on verso. The box measures 142 cm in height and 75 cm in width.
