American, 19th century. A carved wooden cane in the form of a gnarled tree with a snake winding around the upper shaft, having a handle in the bust-length form of a mustached sailor in a ribboned cap whose chest is hollowed to contain an arched-back cat, JBL carved into man's back; lg 36.5 in.Â
