Description
A very fine nautical cane with an ivory dog on whalebone. The slightly curved “L” handle, made of two pieces of walrus ivory, is 2 1/2” high and 3 1/3” to the side. It depicts a nicely detailed hound dog with brown glass eyes, floppy ears, and a faux leather buckle and collar. There is a 3/4” gold collar that is inscribed: “J.H. Simonson, 1850”. The whalebone shaft is octo-carved for eleven inches and there are unique, one-of-a-kind eyelets rimmed with a circle of baleen around ivory stars. The shaft is then a smooth taper to the tip. (There is an old pin present at the base that may mean there was once a metal ferrule.) The overall length is 33” and the condition is very good. It is probably American and it is wonderful example of the kind. Estimate: $3000-$4000
