Description
A very nice English silver vinaigrette cane from Asprey. The silver handle is 2 1/2” high and 1 1/3” in diameter. It has two friction fittings: the top dome lid, engraved with a crown and fist, removes to reveal another dome with holes so that the user might sniff a concoction that was stored below on a bit of wool soaked with healing herbs and vinegar. It would clear one’s head if feeling faint. The underside of the top dome is stamped: “Asprey, London” for the posh London purveyor. The storage compartment is accessed for replenishing the concoction, by the second friction fitting. There is a large “F inscribed in script on the side, for the original owner, and there are London hallmarks for the early 20th Century. The shaft is malacca that ends with a 1” aged brass ferrule. The overall length is 36 3/4” and the condition is very good. (Examples of vinaigrette canes are shown on pages 183 and 232 of Dike’s Cane Curiosa.) It is from the fine Kreh Collection. Estimate: $3000-$4000
