Description
A very nice Japanese damascene cane. The steel knob is 2 1/8” high and 1 1/4” across the top. It is fashioned in a grapevine motif with the top and sides featuring grapevines, leaves, and fruit done in gold overlay on a black background. A ring of gold gadrooning at the base completes the decoration. The shaft is ebonized bamboo that ends with a 7/8” gilded metal ferrule. The overall length is 36” and the condition is very good. It shows gentle wear from usage. It was perhaps fashioned in England with an imported handle, ca 1890. It is a very good example of Japanese artistry on goods made for export to the West. Estimate: $700-$900
