Description
A great whale ivory on carved whalebone nautical cane. Fashioned from a single tooth, the octo-configured whale ivory knob handle is 3” high and 1 1/4” at its widest. It finishes with four rings and then there is a thin baleen separator. The whalebone shaft is fully carved in sections beginning with a thick 3/4” octagonal section, then delicate saw-teeth, then concave columns, and then twist carving that ends with a smooth taper. (It was not made with a separate ferrule). Each carved section is separated by rings or knots. The shaft is long and straight indicating it came from the most desirable center of the panbone. The overall length is 36” and the condition is very good with a fine, creamy age patina. It is perhaps American, ca 1860, and this superb example of sailor artistry is from the Vertical Art Collection™. Per the consignor, the proceeds are to benefit the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation. Estimate: $3500-$5500
