Description
A very nice gold Sabbath School presentation cane. The solid gold handle, configured octagonally, is 7/8” high and 1” across the top. It is inscribed on the top: “Sam’l H. Walley, A Memento From the Teachers of the Mason St. Sabbath School, Boston”. (Samuel H. Walley, 1805-1877, was Superintendent of the Mason Street Sabbath School and wrote an important book in 1837 about two Sabbath School scholars. See Google). There are squared gold eyelets on a macassar ebony shaft that ends with a 1 1/2” burnished brass and worn iron ferrule. The overall length is 35 1/3” and the condition is very good with minor dents on the gold top. It is ca 1840, and it is a fine example of the kind made with high quality materials. Estimate: $1000-$1500
