Description
A very nice horse trader’s measure cane. Fashioned from one piece of natural beech wood, it has a crook handle that measures about 8” along the arc and is 1” thick. At the elbow of the handle, there is a brass push-fitting that allows a long boxwood measure to be withdrawn. It holds a brass bar with a spirit level that swings out to be placed on the horse’s withers to make accurate measurements. (Determining the height of a horse was important for proper matching of prospective riders.) It is calibrated in hands on one side and centimeters on the other and it is marked “Made in England, G & J. Zair, Makers”. (The Zair Company started business in Birmingham, England in 1830 and was most noted for making equestrian whips and crops. See Google.) A 1 1/2” brass ferrule completes the piece. The overall length when a cane is 36 1/3” and the condition is excellent. It is ca 1915 and it is a fine example of the type. Estimate: $500-$700
