Description
A great English 17th Century ivory pique cane. The ivory handle is 3” high and 1 1/4” across the top. It is elaborately pique decorated in the English manner with silver hollow spherules, and there are eyelets that pierce the ivory in 17th Century style. Almost all of the pique work is intact, and the ivory has a wonderful yellow, aged patina. There is a 1/4” rope turned copper collar on a tan malacca shaft that ends with a 5 1/4” long, burnished brass and iron ferrule, that has lots of digs and dings. The overall length is 38” and the condition is very good. It is ca 1695 and it is a very fine example of the kind. (Recent studies have shown that these pique pieces may have been made by Huguenots after they fled to England to avoid religious persecution in France.) Estimate: $3000-$4000
