Description
A big whale ivory knob on whalebone nautical cane. Made of a single whale’s tooth, the large whale ivory handle is 3 1/8” high and 1 3/4” at its widest. It is inlaid on top with a 7/8” silver disc and is turned with lines and then octagonaly configured. There is a 1/4” baleen separator and a 2/3” one of whale ivory on a thick whalebone shaft that is octo-carved for 11” to match the top. The remainder of the shaft is a smooth taper ending with a 1” silvered ferrule. The overall length is 36” and the general condition is good with lots of lines, cracks, and in-filling on the knob handle. It is perhaps American, ca 1850, and in may have been used ashore as a defensive weapon because of it size and weight. It is a remarkable example of the kind. Estimate: $2000-$3000
