Description
THE REBIRTH OF PASTORAL POETRY IN THE RENAISSANCE
SANNAZARO, JACOPO. Arcadia. [at colophon:] Impresso in Vinegia: nelle case d'Aldo Romano, 1514 nel mese di Settembre. [Venice: Aldus Manutius, September 1514].
8vo (152x86 mm), half calf on red calico, gilt title and decorations at spine, marbled fly-leaves, ff. [90] .
First Aldine edition of Sannazaro’s «Arcadia», the text that marked the rebirth of the golden age myth in pastoral poetry and influenced writers for the next two centuries.
Inspired in part by classical authors who described the pastoral world (Virgil, Theocritus, Ovid, Tibullus) and in part by Giovanni Boccaccio’s Ameto, this poem can be considered the first best seller of the European Renaissance.
JACOPO SANNAZARO (c. 1458-1530), was an Italian Renaissance humanist and poet. Born into a distinguished Neapolitan family, he was admitted to the prestigious literary academy of Naples around 1478. Notable among his works are also the Eclogae piscatoriae («Piscatorial Eclogues», 1526), in which the Arcadia’s plaintive shepherds are reinvented as fisherman on the Bay of Naples, and De partu virginis («On the Virgin’s birth», 1526), an epic poem on Jesus nativity.
PROVENANCE: Paper ex-libris at first paste-down From the Library of Louis Thompson Rowe of XV Hammersmith Terrace, W.
REFERENCES: Brunet, V, 128; Renouard, 68; Gamba, 891. CNCE 36176.
