March 13, 1862-Dated Civil War Period, Official US Senate Report Imprint, “Report by the Hon. James Grimes of Iowa,” "STARTLING EVENTS THAT HAS RECENTLY OCCURRED AT HAMPTON ROADS...," Choice Extremely Fine.
This grand, highly detailed and patriotic 8 pages, measuring 9.75” x 6.25” and extremely clean and choice in condition. This histroric report provides an extensive accounting of the operations of the Union’s Mississippi River fleet.
Some highlights include the Capture of Fort Henry and Fort Donelson, driving back of the Rebel river gunboats, with special thanks to Capt. A.H. Foote and the officers under his command. He also accounts for the "STARTLING EVENTS THAT HAS RECENTLY OCCURRED AT HAMPTON ROADS...," stating that the Navy may now be outdated, as IRON-CLAD vessels of war have come into its own. He then praises the men of the USS MONITOR and the men commanded by Lt. Worden, noting the hardships they endured with skill and valor, and that they will be IMMORTAL. Grimes goes on to say they must survey the battle and learn from mistakes.
