American School 19th C. View of the Hudson River Valley Apocryphal signature "Thomas Moran N.A." verso Oil on canvas 2 1/2 x 6 1/4 in. 6.4 x 15.9 cm

An address and telephone number handwritten by Thomas Sidney Moran, who is listed in viable but contradictory online sources as Thomas Moran’s son, or as the son of the artist’s brother Edward Moran, or as the artist himself, is attached verso. It reads “Thos. S. Moran, 142 E. 47 Street, Tel Murray Hill 9112 Tel. Wis. 0438.” Barridoff Galleries has learned that there is no connection between the note and the painting and that Thomas Sidney Moran may not be related to Thomas Moran. Therefore this lot is being offered as American School, but is still believed to be by a significant American hand. The original attribution was to Thomas Moran and appears as such in the printed catalogue as does the original estimate of $4,000/$6000.
