2013-P Australia Silver Land Down Under Surfing 1 oz Proof
A certificate accompanies a this 2013 coin from The Land Down Under series. Struck by The Perth Mint from 1oz of 99.9% silver in proof quality, the coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965.
Australian territorial waters span a massive area larger than the continent itself, extending from the tropical seas of the north to the sub-Antarctic waters of the southern oceans. This vast area incorporates the polar, sub-polar, temperate, and sub-tropical temperature zones. This diversity can include tropical cyclones in the north to wintry storms in the south.
Naturally enough, Australia's coastline boasts some of the longest, most beautiful and unspoilt beaches in the world. This precious marine heritage provides food, industry, extraordinary natural diversity, biological richness and recreation.
Coastal Aboriginal communities have been users and custodians of Australia's marine environment for many thousands of years, and as a testament to European exploration, it is estimated that approximately 6,000 shipwrecks lie beneath the water's surface.
Australians are renowned internationally as a nation of beach and sea lovers. Historically, surfing was a central part of ancient Polynesian culture, and Lieutenant James King was the first to document the art of surfing when completing the journal of Captain James Cook's voyage upon his death in 1779.
The first surf life-saving reel in the world was demonstrated at Bondi Beach in 1906 by its designer Lester Ormsby and the pastime was further promoted by the Hawaiian Duke Kananamoku's visit in 1915. Freshwater (or Harbord) in Sydney, New South Wales.
Surfing reached widespread cultural popularity in the 1960s, developing into a professional sport by the mid-70s. Today, water-loving Australians count amongst the world's most accomplished swimmers and surfers.
The Coin
The coin's reverse depicts a male surfer with his surfboard at the beach framed within a map shape of Australia. The inscription THE LAND DOWN UNDER and The Perth Mint's 'P' mint mark are also incorporated in the design.
The coin's obverse depicts the Ian Rank-Boradley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the 2013 year-date and monetary denomination.
