2003-P 1 Oz Silver Canvasback Duck National Wildlife Refuge System Centennial Proof Coin
The United States Mint entered into a partnership agreement with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation to produce a series of medals to commemorate the centennial of the National Wildlife Refuge System. Each silver medal has a common obverse depicting President Theodore Roosevelt, the father of the National Wildlife Refuge System. The reverse features either a bald eagle, an elk, salmon or canvasback duck to represent the diversity of the Refuge System.
The Medal
Obverse Design: Depicts a full-body portrayal of Theodore Roosevelt standing on high ground and the inscription "CELEBRATING A CENTURY OF CONSERVATION 1903 - 2003 THEODORE ROOSEVELT." Circling the edge of the upper rim is the inscription "NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE SYSTEM."
Reverse Design: The duck reverse depicts two canvasback ducks in flight, flying to the right, one with wings fully spread, the other with up swept wings, both against a wetlands background. The inscription "CANVASBACK DUCK' circles the edge of the upper rim.
