This Lot is a large size autographed vellum certificate of Clemens August, Archbishop of Cologne, in a matter concerning ‘Maria Elisabetha Schellkons, genannt Cochius’. Also mentioned are Johann Engelbert in Wesel, Marx Schönhoven, Joseph Clemnitz and Alexander Cochius. The document is sealed and signed in the lower right edge of J. Fr Clesse.
This document is in fine condition with slight signs of use. The sheet is folded several times and evenly tanned due to the vellum. In the folds partly stained or water stained. The folds show some tears and blemishes. The seal is broken and with small imperfections. The capsule lid of the seal is missing. Sheet size: 52 x 33.5 cm; Seal diameter: 5.8 cm.
Clemens August of Bavaria (1700-1761)
Clemens August of Bavaria comes from the House of Wittelsbach. He is often referred to as ‘Lord of the five churches’ because he was not only elector and archbishop of Cologne, but also Prince-Bishop of Paderborn, Münster, Hildesheim and Osnabrück and thus one of the most influential ecclesiastical princes of his time.
