The present object here is an original drawing by the British cartoonist and illustrator George Cruikshank, executed in pencil and ink, along with a double-sided autographed letter to a friend. Here are just some lines of text ‘... with best wishes & regards I am yours truly dear friend George Cruikshank’.
The drawing and the letter are in fine condition. Both are laid down to one cardboard. The drawing shows few traces of glue on the edges and measures 13.7 x 10.6 cm. The sheets dimensions are 17.8 x 11,3 cm.
George Cruikshank (1792-1878)
George Cruikshank was born in London in 1792. His father was a lithographer, so Cruikshank began early with illustrations of greeting cards and ballads. In addition to his political cartoons Cruikshank illustrated fairy tales, among others Grimm (1823), Defoe's ‘Robinson Crusoe’ (1831), ‘Don Quixote’ by Cervantes (1833), Scott's Waverley Novels (1836) and ‘Oliver Twist’ by Dickens (1837).
