Description
An attractive Makonde staff with the head of a man, Tanzania/Mozambique, with scarified face and labret. There is a 'hook' for hanging the staff behind the back of the body, beneath which is also considerable evidence of its use. Made from heavy, hard wood, with the typical Makonde “crook” in that it slightly bends a few times before straightening out. Along the sides are carved lozenges and the entire piece with a crusty patina and much wear from use. L: c. 49 in (c/ 1m 24 cm). Body re-attached. An old and rare item! Ex collection of Phil Orlando (1932-92) and Robert Gino, founders of the Orlando Gallery, a S.F. Valley fixture for nearly 60 years!
