Description
A 'Phurbu' or Magic Dagger from Nepal, used in the Tsham Dances to exorcise demons. It is of brass with an iron bar cast into it to strengthen its structure. The use of iron to give strength to the casting is also practiced in Nigeria by the Ibo when they produce their ritual 'Ofo', so this is not unusual. This example also has sewn onto it a bundle of cloth triangles, their purpose unknown, but could be amuletic or apotropaic. At the top of the piece is a horse’s head which may refer to Hayagriva (horse neck). Below that are three faces of Ganesha, whose aid is sought in difficult undertakings (remover of obstacles). The handle is a 'Vajra' or thunderbolt, the three blades issue from the mouth of the sea-monster Makara, who symbolizes virtue. There are characters chiseled onto the underside of the blade. L: of casting only, 12 ¼ in (31 cm). Obviously seen some use, once cleaned and now re-toned. This piece was used as a prop in the film 'The Phantom' starring Billy Zane. It was one of the objects displayed in his 'lair' and was obtained from a person who worked on the film. Ex Silver collection.
