ALFONSO XIII: (1886-1941) King of Spain 1886-1931. An excellent, vintage signed 9.5 x 13.5 photograph of the King seated in a three quarter length pose, in uniform, holding his sword and cap in one gloved hand. Photograph by Kavlak of Madrid. Signed in bold, dark fountain pen ink to the lower photographer's mount 'A Maurice Chevalier, Alfonso R' and dated 1926 in his hand. With a blind embossed crown at the head of the photographer's mount. A fine and interesting association photograph. Some very light, minor mottling to the photographer's mount, otherwise VG
Maurice Chevalier (1888-1972) French Actor and Entertainer.
During World War I Chevalier was captured and made a Prisoner of War by the Germans. He was released in 1916 as a result of the secret intervention of King Alfonso XIII, an admirer of the French entertainer Mistinguett who had been romantically involved with Chevalier since 1911. The King was the only monarch of a neutral country with relatives in both the English and German Royal families.
